The Colin Baker Era
Review
Probably the most turbulent era in the history of Doctor Who had fan Colin Baker at the helm of the show. As a Doctor, he was certainly different to the previous incumbant, Peter Davison, but for me probably wasn't the best choice for the role. To be honest, I dislike the arrogance of the way he played the Doctor and that the fact that although he is similar to Tom Baker in drawing the eye, it is not for the same reason. Tom draws the eye because of his charisma, Colin because of his bullish presence.
Having said that I don'tthink Colin Baker was not the right choice for the role of the Doctor, I don't think he was given the best tools with which to do his job. Some of the stories left a lot to be desired, and the Twin Dilemma in particular is one of the worst storys in the shows history. There are bright spots though, with the return of the Daleks and Cybermen of particular note.
The overriding thing about the Colin Baker era though will be that is was abortive. There was no real conclusion to it, and even the cliffhanger at the end of the Trial of a Time Lord series with the Valeyard having escaped was singularly ignored later on. If there were another series of Colin Bakers era with several good stories in it then that would have been better to really judge Colin by, but as it is this wioll pretty much be seen as a very disappointing period in the history of Doctor Who.
