The Children in Need Special
Format Reviewed: TV
Review
So, the Tennant era begins with an afterthought of a scene included in the BBC Children in Need night. Roughly three minutes of new footage was shown, but I was quite impressed that they bothered to do a pre-titles montage from the end of the Eccleston era, and opening titles. The scene is really a prelude to the Christmas Invasion where Tennants reighn as the last surviving Timelord will begin in earnest. For this, the team appear to be following a slightly formulaic routine of a difficult regeneration, the Doctor exhibiting random behaviour and generally struggling to come to terms with his regeneration. OK, so it must be quite an invasive procedure, and I'm sure it will not be the easiest of things to overcome, Doctors 5-8 struggling with the regeneration, it might be time for a different take.
Three minutes isn't really a lot to get exited about, or really to analyse and predict what the future may hold for a Tennant led era of Doctor Who. That said, I believe it does give an insight into a different relationship between Rose and the Doctor, and a 'younger' outward attitude from Tennant as opposed to the more intense style, if a little too inanely grinning, of Eccleston.
So, overall it was a nice gesture of the Doctor Who team in Cardiff to film a scene for charity, hopefully helping them to raise more cash on the night. It also gives David Tennant a chance to ease into the publics consciousness rather than exploding onto a largely drunk population on Chrismas day evening. Therefore I rather like it.
