The Edge of Destruction
Format Reviewed: DVD
Review
The Edge of Destruction is rather an oddity for a Doctor Who story, and is somewhat of a filler. The story only has the main characters in it, and the only set is the Tardis. Various reasons are protrayed for why the story exists, and why it is set as it is that I won't go into, but suffice it to say that the budget only stretched to producing a story such as this at the time.
Following on from the inspirational introduction of the Daleks, Edge of Destruction doesn't really go anywhere. The story is entirely focussed on the relationships of the main characters, and particularly the divide between the Doctor and Susan, and Ian and Barbera. There are accusations, counter-accusations and suspicions aroused amongst all the crew concerning what has gone wrong with the tardis. If anything, this story serves to address the hostility that is oresent between the main characters and make the Tardis a more harmonious place to be.
The acting does have a number of flaws in it though. Most of the characters fluff their lines occasionally, but poor old William Hartnell seems to have an awful lot of problems getting some of his lines out at all. It is symptomatic of the way the story was produced though, with time being very short and money shorter, they just had to get the episodes 'in the can'.
Overall, the two-parter of the Edge of Destruction serves to make the Tardis crew closer and build the relationships of the main characters. Apart from that though, the story is largely forgettable as nothing of any real note actually happens apart from the fluffing of lines.
