Exploration Earth
Format Reviewed: CD
Review
Exploration Earth is a short piece produced for BBC schools, and was added to the Genesis of the Daleks CD release as it doesn't really merit a release of its own. The cast consists of three people: Tom Baker as the Doctor, Elizabeth Sladen as Sarah-Jane Smith and John Westbrook as the Megron. Essentially this is a short piece where the Doctor shows Sarah various points in the development of Earth, and the Megron pops up at each jucture to add a bit of story to an otherwise entirely educational script.
It is authentic enough, with the sound effects and music being of standard BBC Doctor Who stock, and with Tom Baker and Liz Sladen giving typically charismatic performances in the lead roles. What is disappointing for someone who would listen to this from a Doctor Who perspective is the lack of a real story. This is mitigated by the short nature of the adventure, and its context of being for BBC schools so it is forgivable.
There's not really a lot more that can be said, so overall Exploration Earth is a fairly pleasant way to spend a few minutes, especially if you're a fan of the Tom Baker and Liz Sladen era. More could probably have been done, but it is really breaking new ground in doing something like this so that can be applauded.
